Starmade | Rail docker beam does not output from active camera
Confirmed task for development, LowPublic

Description

#1
Lancake:
The ship core beam comes out of your active cockpit, this was an added feature months ago. This does not work for the rail docker beam though.

Camera at the top is active, rail docker beam still comes out of the rail docker itself at the bottom.

#2
Schema
Since you can place a cockpit right next to the docker, this is imo the same mechanic as before. The only thing that might be missing is shooting sideways

#3

haveing to set another block just for targeting docking limits smaller builds in someway

Please try to be more imaginitive.

You have dismissed this issue as insignificant, yet I find it a daily nuisence in gameplay.

1.- It's usually hard to see the docking beam from cameras I use for flying or shooting.

2.- Adding a docking camera often doesn't help if the ship / part is large or has protruding pieces (like long cannonbarrels, antennae, fins, etc); It's difficult or impossible to face and hit the rail with the docking beam, because I collide with the other entity I'm trying to dock to.

3.- Docking beam always shoots forwards. Docking module placed on the rear of a ship / part will try to shoot through the ship; will not reach the rail.

4.- In large builds, however well placed and easily accessible the dock and docker are, the beam can be simply too short to reach it.

All four problems would be solved if the beam was coming from the currently active camera, like it did in the old docking system.
I don't understand why did you take such a backward step; It was already proven that such a thing is necessary, and it was put in the game.

i know this isn't the forums, but i actually find this feature well-thought out, and find this very immersive as a pilot. i love switching to my docking camera, piloting correctly with adjusted thrust control, lining up my docker beam shot and nailing it. there's nothing like bringing a 500m+ ship home and naling the docking alignment while drifting in.

Will docking beams still be in the game when magnetic docking or whatever they were talking about is implemented?

If the docking beam is extended too far it becomes more of a teleport beam than a docking beam which is why I hope they switch to the magnetic method fully, otherwise, you could fit the largest titan through a 1 block hole in a wall via the current docking mechanic.
