Starmade | Missiles targeting non-existent thing
Closed, DuplicatePublic

Description

The entity disappeared for a while but the remaining missiles still tries to hit the non-existent target, result this infinite loop patterns.

I think when a target of missile disappear from existence its following missiles should do the same aswell.

Couldn't reproduce with ship targets, I could with a station though.
What were you shooting at?
Did the missiles keep doing this even when the nav marker was removed?

If a station overheats while the missile is locked on, it will keep trying (a station can have 0 blocks and still count as a station while overheating)
Didn't see that on ships though.
Using /destroy_entity for both had it still working fine.

I didn't shot personally. It was simulated fight between several pirate drones versus trade guild drones.
The only thing I can assume is :

  1. it wasn't station for sure but ship or remain of docked unit
  2. I have saw that only once in my other test serv (so it already happened in a version pre-0.197.36 too)

I had my navigation marker filter toggle on ship ON only so maybe it was a turret (I didn't thought to change the navigation filter to see if it appear for anything else sry).

But I remember also that even by entirely deswpawn anything in the sector I could still see something indicated on the radar but when I reach it's supposed location I could saw absolutely nothing, like if it was a ghost & invisible entity staying there. After a reboot of the server-client, the sector was totally empty, even in the radar.

I know I had use destroy_entity_dock for some floating entities & overheating ones but absolutely don't know if the command was involved in that phenomenon.

When you see it again, take a better look and share those details. Don't really know what it could be.

As long as the marker is there, the lock on will persist but not sure what caused a ship core marker to not despawn if it had 0 blocks left. Did you see overheating?

Did you see overheating?

I saw some overheating entities, some was deleted by myself with destroy_entity_dock command some others deswpawned itself after a short cooldown (less than 30 sec). But for this particular entity, can't say since I noticed/guessed its existence only when some missiles attempt to reach it.

But notice that T1708: AI switch side or friendly fire focus happen during the same session that this bug. It might be the remain of the weird anomaly entity which got focused by its team mates. Can't be certain cause I didn't saw what happen to it at the end.

It happened again. So I have more details this time.

Missiles rush on a ghost thing and did their loop pattern, I went closer and turn ON all navigation entity. It was undocked turrets ; surely former owned by that overheating ship on the right. The turret itself didn't overheat.

But as you can see this time the entity was visible but still ghosted since missiles pass through it without impact it. One of the entity name was TEAM2rl31021 (forgot to looked the name of the other one dock on/under it)

But later some drones tried to shoot some other ghost & invisible entities with lasers and missiles (surely some undocked turrets too)

In several points of the sector we could saw that distinct missiles loop pattern, so I used

/despawn_all TEAM used all

And there nothing special on the radar this time, everything was cleared (even ghost entities). Few missiles remained but they were go straight like if they had lost their lock/target.

Conclusion : I don't think destroy_entity_dock is involve but I suspect more how the turrets were made (so either arsenal or create docking mess). I'll ask the question to the drone creator for what he used to create this turrets.

Interesting details, missile targeting changed quite a bit but this could give us clues of what's happening in another issue. Merging them together.
