I don't think it matters if it is a pirate or just an asteroid. I checked this before and it was working back when we had the new explosions in a dev build. It's possible that you're just never reaching your target because missile range is limited and you're probably firing on something that goes out of range at the end.
The thing is... I've had it occur within 300m because the mob was in another sector. After not seeing the damage, I flew forward toward the enemy and had the stutter you get from crossing a sector boundary.
Tested Negative, unable to confirm.
Placed ship in one sector, warped to sector next door. Fired on the other ship, damage was done. Also attacked a pirate station, and was damaging pirate ships in the next sector.
How is your connection if on mp, or are you playing in sp as well? what is your FPS and ping.
The ping were pretty low... it's a server on the same network <1ms gigabit. Can you test a ship in your sector, flying to another sector and the locked on volley is released? It's a very common thing and I don't know how else to help. My sector sizes are all at 2.5k (not sure what default is, but we were adjusting the sector sizes to make ships stay in the same sector for longer) and/because we get this all the time.

I was able to get it to happen once on Andir's server. I have asked him to submit the logs for that time period 3:25-3:50 CST US was my time.
-Got a pirate station agitated.
-backed into next sector and started firing.
I am not convinced this is because of crossing sector. hence the submitting the logs, so you can see what is happening..
I'm having the issue where my turrets do 0 damage to pirates on my titan ship. The missiles also do not damage asteroids that are a sector away. On the server I am playing on, sectors are I think 13k large. The pirates I was attempting to hit were between 10 and 26k away. All missile have a range of between about 36 and 46k. There are close to 500 missile computers spread to 8 different turrets. Even when I turn off half of the turrets, 0 damage is done. I just finished this thing in single player and spawned it into the server to find out it isn't working. Quite disappointed.
