i can confirm this observation on R9 280X AMD ... doubt its GPU related, but its noticeable.

From what I can tell it seems to be more related to the size of large ice covered asteroids, all the transparent blocks seem to be causing a graphic strain.

The reason the fps goes up as you get closer is due to some asteroids no longer being in your field of view, however asteroids behind the one you are looking at will still cause an fps drop.

Only thing I can figure to help this out is have transparent blocks go opaque after a certain distance

Also seeing same behaviors on MacOS (Intel Iris GPU). Forcefully enabling framebuffers (TAB+F3) seems to reduce the jerkiness.

Tab F3 toggles the Framebuffer option ...

dont tell me with Framebuffers off it is faster ? ..please dont :(

Sorry, I meant framebuffers (I'll update earlier posting)...blame it my lack of morning coffee.

...and as for turning on/off. On MacOS framebuffer defaults to off if I remember correctly: T1466

this does tend to happen, even with my ultra high fps (slow on sp server) it doesnt happen as often, not for me, as i dont really get lag, (win 10)
