Starmade | Damage beam ticks don't deal both planet core and block damage at the same time
Confirmed task for development, TrivialPublic

Description

Testing out a new prototype planet cracking siege beam, was disheartened to find that despite being basically the best weapon in terms of compactness and reload, it is fouled by some strange hidden mechanic - that being it passes straight through a core and deals basically no damage.

I Do try searching for previous reports that are related, Apologies if this is already a known issue.

Steps to reproduce

To see a clear difference between results, change the blockBehaviorConfig of DamageBeams

  1. Increase damage to 500 000 / 1 000 000
  2. Set tick rate on 1.0 so every burst only has 1 tick in it
  1. Go to a planet with a 1 damage beam weapon
  2. Shoot a planet plate section that is close to the core

-> Full penetration, planet plate will have a hole going straight to the planet core, and and the opposite side of the planet there's another hole of the damage beam.
The planet core itself though, has received no damage (when the beam past through it).

Tester information (Internal use only)

Well I can reproduce some of it, but doesn't sound as severe as you describe it.
Basically anything from a single tick can only apply either planet core damage, or block damage.

If a single tick does 1 000 000 damage and you hit a planet plate, it will apply any remaining damage through the planet core and then hit the opposing plate where it further applies its remaining damage.
If that hits a planet core directly, it goes straight into it.

Not a severe issue though, beams fire 5 ticks per burst, at least some of those ticks will hit the planet core directly and deal planet damage.

I should note to say that this is just like the fixed bug (For cannons at least) of when a planet plate receives "damage" the core becomes transparent to attack...

Can't reproduce, a damage beam hurts the planet core just fine for me. It's possible your beam is just too small to deal real damage since planet HP does regen rather quickly.

I did notice piercing damage numbers at the planet plate on the otherside, however these did not deal damage to the planet plate so probably some weird left over of T91.

So yeah, does this still happen and any idea what I'm missing? It appears to be fine for me.

It might have been my specific procedure with killing a planet that caused it, but, it happened so many times in a row with my set up that I grew frustrated and gave up in trying to destroy planets. The ship had 200m power and fired off a damage beam-pulse-explosive (100% each) that dealth 17m damage in a single second.

Running another test with a "different" ship, I think Ive run into more specifics.
Firing the Siege beam (Or other sufficiently "high" damage beam) into the planet with absolutely no borehole produces a "Salvage Beam" effect on the core. Its rather odd, but does seem to be there I reccon.

Its just strange, and has cause no end of frustrations for me when a ship that can nearly bust 2 planets back to back fails to even kill one, and just makes a hole in the other side of the plates.

It happens maybe... 50% of the time, or more. Making a borehole with a cannon weapon completely bypasses the issue, so long as there is no terrain blocks left in the way to the core. This improves the planet killing probability of the ship with my "Fire and Forget" procedure with he logic beam. Firing it, waiting a moment, then logging off. The beam fires a few seconds before the sector is set to unload.
