This document was moved from /w/create_bug_task/.

Overview

To report an Issue with the game or any other Starmade related function, use the create field in the top right corner of the page.

Click the + and select "Report a Bug" OR
Use this URL to start directly.

You should now see this form (may vary depending on permissions):

To help with filling the Fields, this will go through them from top to bottom, with additional details that may be required.

Head

Title

Please supply a short and to the point title, this will usually become the working title we use for internal communication or reference, so "undocking" or "bug with ship" are titles we do not want to see, please specify the problem as close as possible.

Bad examples:

  • bug with ship
  • undocking

Good Examples:

  • Ship looses all logic connections on server restart
  • Nullpointer when undocking from an asteroid
Assigned To

Usually keep this field empty, unless you are told to assign a task to someone on creation.

CC (Carbon Copy)

Tested it, or reporting it together with someone else that is also registered on the tracker?
You can add them here to make them receive mail notifications on any status change or action taken.

Priority

Leave this on "Needs Triage/Unclassed" we have a classification matrix and the "default priority" for a task may change depending on phase of the release cycle and affected system, so leave this to the Issue navigation team unless you got told to set a specific priority.

Projects

Leave this open, don't set a project unless you were told to.

Issue Type

Only "Bug" for now, features are only added by Schine members for reference or have them on the task-board.

Starmade Details

Steps to Reproduce

Here you describe what steps to take to reproduce the issue you've mentioned. You can also post this in the description field. A tester will make sure this field is filled in.

Category

The game splits up in different categories, those help to find, sort and group tasks and problems to different scopes for developers to have a better overview on what they are working on. Leave unchanged when unsure.

Affected Gamemode(s)

Please select the gamemode you encountered the issue in,
select Single and Multi ONLY if you tested in both and are sure its happening in both.
Leave unchanged if unsure, we can classify it on validation. Use Serverside to tag server-lockups or similar on dedicated servers.

First occurrence (version)

Since which version is it occurring?
Use the current version you play in if you are not sure.

Testing Results

Reproducible

Can you easily reproduce the bug? Do not assume anything, an issue stated as Yes here and not working on a few tries, may get fully discarded/rejected, as it stated false information. So make sure you can cause it on a clean installation without any modifications in the above affected gamemode.

Last tested (version)

This will be filled by a tester that actually confirms your issue, leave this open, unless you got told otherwise.

Assigned Tester

This will be filled by a tester that actually confirms your issue, leave this open, unless you got told otherwise.

Hardware/Software/System

OS-Specific

Does it only happen on specific Operating Systems? Don't assume anything, select in case you really did see it happen on one and not on others.

Hardware-Specific

Does it only happen on specific Hardware?
Don't assume anything,
only select in case you are able to nail it down to one hardware component.
Use Other if you encountered another type of Hardware problem and name it in your summary.

Video Card Vendor

Please select your video card manufacturer. Select "other" if your manufacturer is not listed here, and add it to the description at the end.

Video Card Model

Please specify model name of your video card. (Geforce GT 500M for example)

Detected video (Graphicsinfo.txt)

Paste the contents of the file graphcisinfo.txt from local client logs directory. Together with your video card this helps to clear up detection issues, or driver specific problems.

SMC-Report

Paste Starmade-System-Checker report here, this fields main use is for support work, or other problems we may face. The report contains some basic information about your system.

Serverconfig (server.cfg)

Paste the contents of the file server.cfg from local client if using single player mode, else use the one from server if possible when using multiplayer on a server you do not own. Please add this in any case when adding a 'Serverside' issue, so we can reproduce the configuration and make sure its not a configuration error.
Do not forget to remove the SUPER_ADMIN_PASSWORD if using it for your server.
Please replace only the line in <> as the config file is rather long, it would clutter the view badly without the "enclosing" vertical limiters.

Clientconfig (settings.cfg)

Paste the contents of the file settings.cfg from local client.
Please replace only the line in <> as the config file is rather long, it would clutter the view badly without the "enclosing" vertical limiters.

Java Version (32bit)

Open up a console on your system and type:

java -d32 -version

For reference: It should look like this when done

Right click the window and click "select" in windows, drag a box around the text and hit "return" to copy it. Now press ctrl + v together in the field and it should paste the result there.

Java Version (64bit)

Open up a console on your system and type:

java -d64 -version

paste the reply in the field with 64bit.

For reference: It should look like this when done

Right click the window and click "select" in windows, drag a box around the text and hit "return" to copy it. Now press ctrl + v together in the field and it should paste the result there.

Description

This is the most essential step in fixing a bug.
Having a way to get the bug happen on the developers and testers computer, will have a really high chance to get it fixed so if you can, leave a how to reproduce section in the description to help both the developers and testers.

Start writing down every step you have to do, right after preparing the new starmade installation.
Assume only 'Start a new single player game' as an obvious replacement for the multiple clicks required to make the game go to a new single player universe.

Some bugs are not possible to trigger on purpose or are sort of random.
Those need at least a log of them happening on a clean client and what you were doing while it happened, narrowed down to the absolutely essential factors encouraging it.
