Starmade | Graphics issues with Starmade for latest nVidia drivers on GeForce GTX 960m
Closed, RejectedPublic

Description

Strange graphical issues happen for me ever since I updated my nVidia drivers on my computer to the latest standards.

The first one that I noticed was standard armor becoming fuzzy and distorted in texture appearance when I move a small distance away from it.

The second is missile flares/beacons having rough edges when it comes to transparency.

The third is the orientation arrow that you see in buildmode being turned pitch-black, instead of a mix of red, green and blue.

The fourth is hull blocks having a speckled/dirty look to their texture.

The fifth, which is by far the worst and is actually making gameplay difficult, is orbital sectors appearing with barely visible highlighting, making it nearly impossible to find the location of asteroids in your star system without jumping around.

More information will be provided soon.

Feedback:
Keeping in feedback until more information is available, may you provide your video settings too?

I have had the same issue with hulls. For me it started when I updated to windows 10. It is most noticeable with black hull and I can not see any issues with decorative blocks so much.

Well im not complaining cause all the emails are so annoying!... still got an email though...

But I am also confirming the pitch black orientation arrow for me too.

Edit:
Beacon issue also appears in my game

I'm experiencing the same issues as described above with standard armor and beacons, but none of the others.

I also have an intermittent issue (no idea what triggers it) with lighting close to the player being overly bright and very washed out.

Windows 8.1
GTX 770
350.12 drivers

None of these issues appeared prior to the current release (v0.19401) and I've been using the same drivers for awhile.

Planr added a comment.Aug 23 2015, 5:57 AM

e4278, I have seen that bug before myself when playing on SS several months back.

https://youtu.be/p4M00yR5Ut8

e4278 and Planr, I too have experienced that but not since the latest release.

AndyP added a comment.Aug 23 2015, 1:58 PM

So, we have now:

Some that have this issues since latest update,
some that have it regardless,
some that dont have it since latest update anymore.

Lets dump the update then, and see whatelse changed.

Did you possibly update video drivers?
Updated java? (For those with discrete GPU that is only enabled on demand, you may have to add java to the "execute with high performance GPU" list again
Changed any other setting?

May you all try a reference installation on default settings?

To do this,
browse to your hard-disk (C:) and create a new folder.
C:\Starmade
however, any path not in a protected area from windows will work. ('Programs', 'Desktop', 'Download' and 'My Files' are places that can cause problems. Antivirus scanners block access or scan every file-access and slow down your game without a good reason.)

Now place a fresh downloaded launcher from the official download page

http://star-made.org/download

in that folder and start it.

Now select the correct path in the Launcher:

enter the correct path into the opening dialog:

Hit OK and
let it install the latest version by clicking on:

in the Launcher.

Does it still happen now?

e4278 added a comment.Aug 23 2015, 5:47 PM

AndyP,
I just tried a fresh installation and I can still see the standard hull texture issues and beacon issue (though neither quite as severe as the images posted above). The overbright lighting hasn't appeared yet, but that is an intermittent issue so I can't be sure that it won't come back again without more testing.

Playing with the settings I have found that the standard hull looks fine if you disable texture compression (all other hull types look normal to me either way)
This issue is most noticeable on black standard armor but can still be seen on the other colors. Thinking back, I may have missed it if it appeared earlier as I rarely use that color/hull combo and I have been looking at it more closely since I noticed this bug report.

The lighting issue I definitely have never seen before and it doesn't appear at all if I go back to v0.19361. I also noticed that issue when testing some of the pre 0.19401 dev builds.

I'm running Java 1.80_51(64 bit) and Nvidia 350.12 drivers, neither of which have been updated all that recently.

I'll try to swap video drivers with an older and a newer version as well as play around with some more settings when I get a chance.

e4278 added a comment.Aug 23 2015, 8:56 PM

Small update: I think I found out what is triggering the lighting issue.

When you switch into build mode, the ship you are in is supposed to highlight itself and flash briefly.

The bug seems to be caused by that initial highlight turning on and never turning off again. Switching into build mode triggers it (although not consistently).

Once the bug is triggered that highlight will follow the player around and seems to affect whatever the player's camera is close to.

I don't know if this actually relates to the other graphical bugs in this thread though, so maybe it should get its own report.

AndyP, I have tried a fresh install and I do still get all these problems. Also I first noticed them when I updated to windows 10

e4278, Tried to turn off 2D texture compresion but it just crashed my game at 96%

Planr added a comment.EditedAug 25 2015, 6:15 PM

The dark highlighted sectors/systems thing is even worse than I thought. This is what Shattered Skies's galaxy map looks like for me now. Every claimed system is a dark shade of black and its nearly impossible to tell where anyone is. Navigationally, it makes me blind. I can't plot a course anywhere within reason because I can't tell what's what. I can barely even play the game anymore because such vital features are broken.

Also, here are my logs.

I don't know how to tell what driver number I am running on, or my Java for that matter either. Would anyone be able to help me figure that out?

Also, just tried a fresh installation. I still had all the same problems. So yeah.

AndyP added a subscriber: schema.Aug 25 2015, 6:40 PM

we are currently looking into change to the shaders, that may have caused this increase in hardware requirements.

As the shipyard animation and transparency in design mode has implemented some type over scanline overlay,
which does seem to cause a higher requirement in hardware than any other game mechanic before (although it is very similar to build-mode-flashing, but less disturbing).

So we should put this on hold until we have a reply from @schema about this.

After disabling shadows I haven't seen the issue come back. Interesting thing though: after exiting the client and re-connecting last night, I still had the same haze as shown in the second picture. I suspect something is being set in the video card which is not being cleared out later.

Reading over the commends on here, it looks like it would be useful for me to point out that my CPU doesn't have an on-chip GPU--just 8 processing cores of AMDx64 goodness. so there's only one video card my OS has to contend with, there's no switching.

AndyP added a comment.Sep 3 2015, 6:19 PM

so under the line, we have it happen with shadows enabled, but also on AMD cards?
(Anyone with AMD card having this "shader-build-mode-lighten-mode" brightness error?)

Yea I was about to say. This report covers several things that arent mentioned in the other tasks. Namely, the black build mode orientation arrow and the near-invisible faction systems/orbital sectors on the galactic map.

I am no longer seeing the bad hull texture issue in dev .19420

jzimmerman4 added a comment.EditedSep 5 2015, 5:02 PM

And in v.19428 I am not seeing the beacon issue with the rough edges
Black orientation arrow is still an issue though

AndyP added a comment.Sep 5 2015, 7:00 PM

Hm, did you try a fresh install?

Not sure how this could happen.

I did not no just updated my dev world to the newest dev build

AndyP added a comment.Sep 5 2015, 8:11 PM

Could you try a fresh installation then?

I suspect some setting causing it, and if its in the default settings, we should have a good way to find the affected systems.

Fresh install with out any changed settings and hull looks normal as do beacons. Looks like most of this was fixed in the recent devs on my end at least.

AndyP added a comment.Sep 5 2015, 11:42 PM

And the build-direction marker?

Still black..

AndyP added a comment.Sep 10 2015, 1:06 AM

Not that good, hm.

Now we need at least one other person with that issue to find something to work with. :/

"The first one that I noticed was standard armor becoming fuzzy and distorted in texture appearance when I move a small distance away from it."

I have this as well, but i noticed it when I stripped Starmade to enable me to get higher fps (simple shadows, no stars, no background, etc) I have an amd card, but not a great one.

AndyP added a comment.Jan 12 2016, 7:20 PM

Anyone news on this?
If not, we may not be able to do anything about it from game side.

I'm still seeing this. The effect seems to be linked to when the blocks fade in and out to bright white when entering build mode. It doesn't appear that the blocks are allowed to fade completely back to normal before the blocks are lightened again. Lets just remove this flash completely and see what happens. I doubt anyone would notice this flash effect disappearing anyway as it's so brief.

Can you make sure its not the "simple light mode" enabled from the options menu?
Seems like that was the cause for most above screenshots.
The build-mode-flashing is the only real indicator where the build zone ends, and what you can build on or not, if you are unsure.

AndyP closed this task as Rejected.Mar 5 2016, 9:55 PM

-Rejected-

I strongly believe this is a duplicate to T281 or at least related to it and possibly simple-light mode cross relations.
