Starmade | beam weapons lose damage across sector borders
Closed, DuplicatePublic

Description

I like beam weapons, but from experience, I've noticed that they tend to do much worse than cannons. So I did some testing. I did many tests, but this is the one I want to show you.

This is my beam weapon...
216 total size
Main - 108 - Damage Beam Computer
Slave - 108 - Damage Beam Computer

This is my test setup...
The beam weapon is in sector 8,102,11
The cubes are in sectors 8,102,11 and 8,103,11

This is the damage to the cube in 8,102,11 (same sector as beam weapon)

This is the damage to the cube in 8,103,11 (different sector than beam weapon)

The beam weapon seems to do far less destruction after crossing a sector border. Also, I lined up my weapon on the target and pressed "V' to make sure I was stationary and not moving while firing. In the above pictures I performed 4 shots on each cube. And the cubes are using green standard armor and thruster blocks.

Event Timeline

In the newest version (v0.199.432)... it now destroys zero blocks when shooting a beam/beam weapon across a sector border. Shooting a target inside the same sector is more impressive though.

I mentioned this bug in the latest starmade update thread and schema hotfixed it. Long range beams are working good now.

This task is a duplicate of T1024. And the issue was fixed using that report.

What you're seeing in the 402 release is a broken system that still shows you some results. There's no penetration damage whatsoever in sector crossing. After fixing T1024, the way it works changed which also resulted in the first damage block moving inside the penetration iteration.
That made this issue way more apparent since now you did no damage at all with sector crossing stuff. That too was resolved in one of the hotfixes as you said, although not because you mentioned it on the forums. We noticed it first when some people poked me on slack about it ;)

Using Phabricator - 1 point (never would have started a fix attempt on it otherwise)
Using Slack - 1 point
Using random forum posting - 0 points since it's just repeating what we already knew
