Description

Big problem. The weapon-fire should be stopped completely, but instead it simply doesn't interact with the station. Allowing astronauts and undocked entities to be damaged and destroyed even when behind the stations shielding.

Couple this with the fact that some weapons appear to have longer actual ranges than published (so that hostiles can shoot you from distances that prevent them from appearing on the HUD), this seriously nerfs the actual usefullness of faction homing a station or planet.

  • Allow AI entity to shoot at Station which is a faction home
  • Beams and missiles appear to pass through and are able to damage/kill entities which are not docked but are inside.
Tester information (Internal use only)

The fix of T786 made this problem come back into focus.
While T786 is something that could be exploited, and made internal ship defense useless, this issues is about the raytracing and splash damage not correctly being stopped by walls.

I remember we had some function that raytraces from impact toward the astronaut to make sure it could be directly hit, possibly that does not trigger anymore or got broken.

dock your ships, and when aligned to a station you should be save from impacts, as you 'should' inherit the homebase protection.
However, making this possible would need to make the whole sector go into protected mode, which allows exploits on its own.

I'm sorry AndyP. I don't think I wrote up the problem very clearly.

The problem isn't that my astronaut is getting killed when hit by weapons fire. That part is not a problem, it means that the weapons fire mechanic is working.

The problem is that if I am behind a wall that is part of a faction-home-protected entity, weapons-fire will pass through that wall as if it wasn't there and hit my astronaut. That is the problem. The fact that the protected entity no longer acts as cover ('cover' in the modern-day tactical combat sense), when it did a few years ago.

This is made a bit worse since the ai entities are shooting from distances in excess of 2 sectors, so the player doesn't even see a red diamond on the HUD. There's just a flash of light and you are dead. Even if you are completely encapsulated by the supposedly invulnerable station and/or docked ship.

This should in theory only happen with a modified config, usually you cannot fire over two sectors distance, or at least should not.

I think the original problem is, we had a solution for this, but as this was reported as bug we fixed T786,
and now the inheritance of the aligned entity is broken, for sure you are now unprotected again.

The base problem is the way weapons-raytraces work, but this is a known different issue, and calculating this should be rather complex.
Going to rename this issue and alter the description to match the actual problem.

I was in a homebase being attacked a few days ago and this was not occurring, but I will test it again. Im thinking this only occurs with modified configs as well though, mind posting your server config up here?

Tested, does not occur in vanilla config. I noticed missiles do seem to pass through the station and then 'explode' on contact with the player, but in every instance I observed this I still took 0 damage anyway
