Launcher | Beta Launcher Mac: Malfunction on opening launcher
Closed, RejectedPublic

Description

I installed the beta launcher yesterday and got it up and running. I think it worked correctly at that point. (I don't remember specifically whether I launched it after closing it before reinstalling.) I messed around with the files a bit in Application Support/Starmade and fumbled a bit trying to copy my templates, blueprints, configs, etc. from my old installation so I deleted the Application Support/Starmade, the launcher app, and its version and license files, then extracted a new copy from the original .zip I downloaded. I installed the launcher and ran it. It worked fine until I closed the launcher and tried re-opening it. Now the icon appears in the dock, but nothing else happens. I tried waiting a while to see if it was just slow, but after fixing my breakfast and coming back, nothing had changed. I tried redownloading the launcher, but nothing has changed. After posting this I'm going to do some testing with computer restarts.

I had a sneaking suspicion it might malfunction because the old launcher doesn't work very well on my machine. The following is for the old launcher, and may or may not be related depending on how similar the old and new launchers are in their code: To make the old launcher work, I have a duplicate of the starter.jar file and I launch two instances of the launcher at the same time, then press Start Game on each instance a few seconds apart. The main menu usually comes up a matter of seconds later, although both the launchers and the main menu are very slow to come up.

I have determined how to reproduce this bug on my computer, if this is even the same issue. After restarting my computer, I was able to run the launcher normally. However, if I close the launcher rather than pressing launch, then try to open the launcher again, this happens. (See attached image.) That large rectangle is the launcher. It flashes the normal launcher briefly as it starts up, then turns into this.

I restarted after the issue above and, the same thing continued to happen. The launcher came up momentarily, and then turned grey as the image above shows.

I decided to try something else. I deleted the files from Application Support/Starmade/Launcher. The launcher booted up and showed the license agreement and login windows, but after that it sat in the dock doing nothing as in the original post.

I deleted the entire Application Support/Starmade directory, and the launcher came up normally, obviously without a Starmade installation. I don't think the launcher app is corrupted or damaged.

what exact OSX version are you using ?
are you using the latest Launcher version V58 from
http://sm-launcher-test.s3.amazonaws.com/index.html?prefix=jobs/Launcher/ ?

OSX Yosemite version 10.10.5 (14F1509).
Yes, latest launcher version.

I'm working on figuring out the difference between the glitch where the launcher doesn't appear and the one where it turns grey. Will be finished soon.

The issue seems to occur when launching with starmade already installed. I tried closing starmade from the game, main menu, and launcher.
Here's what I found:

Deleted Application Support/Starmade, then launched with starmade not installed in Application Support
Result: launcher worked normally and installed starmade.

Launched main menu, started game, closed game, tried launcher
Result: launcher window does not appear. However, the login window will display after rebooting (launcher still doesn't work).

Deleted Application Support/Starmade, used launcher to reinstall starmade, then launched the main menu, closed main menu. Tried launcher again
Result: launcher window does not appear. However, the login window will display after rebooting (launcher still doesn't work).

Deleted Application Support/Starmade, used launcher to reinstall starmade, then closed launcher and opened it again.
Result: Login window shows, then launcher works, but thinks it needs to update again when it’s already on the latest Starmade.
Launch after closing launcher again
Result: launcher window does not appear. Didn't try rebooting.

I did all of these tests using the option "play as guest" at the login window. I haven't figured out what causes the glitch where the launcher window turns grey. I speculate that it's a separate issue though.
