Starmade | Ghosts blocks preventing me from deleting a ship and distorts its parameters and characteristics
Closed, RejectedPublic

Description

It's happened on my multiserver.

Major changes in server.cfg I remember to have made
SECTOR_SIZE = 10000
PLAYER_MAX_BUILD_AREA = 1000

I confronted this bug first time when I created a test ship specially in order to test power generator design and when I received conflicting datas while the power generator design was strictly identical.

That how I noticed my alone ship core generated 2836.7e/s and my Mass, my Blocks count and my Total rotational potential were messed up. Furthermore I was unable to delete the ship core. So i use an admin command to delete. I recreate a ship, and the same bug occured. The energy generation is real and usable and the Total rotational potential really affected the ship (the alone ship turned really slowly like a huge ship)

I looked for to that hypothethic last "ghost blocks" but they had no physical rendering ingame I wasn't found them. The core was the last block alone but Starmade simulate/count that ghost blocks.

I was able to reproduce it in 2 different sessions on that same server (see step to reproduce). I tested it with Z 1000 line, X 1000 line and then Y 1000 line and all cases reproduce exactly the effects described below on pictures.
I tried Z 100 and Z 10 but no anomalies occures, I don't know the precise minimal amount it would affect and produce the bug but 1000 suppose to produce it for sure.

Above a screen of a normal core before the manipulation. Default stats underline in green, keep it in minds to compare with the next results.

Here the result after add 1000 Z power generators blocks behind the core with advanced build mode and remove it by use UNDO button. The red underline stats changed and are now the new default base stat of the ship. That's mean if rebuild things on that core the stat results won't be the same that the same & strictly identic ship design but on a fresh new spawn core.

Here the warning message when I attempted to delete the core. Core is the last block but SM trust the contrary.

Strange fact is also something seems randomly reseting or draining power. Here I just exit and re-enter right away and the power was dropped to 0 and start refilling.

As a matter of fact, I switch my installation path in order to try in Single Mode on a another world. I updated to 0.19556 and switched PLAYER_MAX_BUILD_AREA from 100 to 1000. And there nothing happen.
When I came back to my multi-server installation path and try it during a 3rd session it hadn't happen. So I'll looking for the future ones.

Here the logs from my 2n time occurrence (2 test sessions), the ship is named "Ghost".

Here the logs when I retry after my switch from single-mode and came-back to multi and it didn't happen :

Steps to reproduce

Even if it's seems that not happen at each session ; when it happens, it happens at 100% during the ongoing session.

  1. Create a ship
  2. Go advanced build mode and put Z (or X or Y) to 1000
  3. Add the 1000 power generators this way
  4. Remove it by using UNDO button
  5. The core should be undeletable and ship characteristics messed up cause of that ghosted blocks

Build areas that big are not save to work with
its simply not designed for that.
even at 100 it is possible to run into problems

so you did place sticks of 1000 long lines at once and then did remove them again and the ship while in Multiplayer didnt go back to only the core? .. and on reload it was good again and it didnt happen in your local singleplayer game ?

If yes than that sounds more or less as expected ... the server is queuing your build and remove request through all those chunks and working on that bit by bit to prevent a lockup by only doing that request.
Its a lag prevention messure.

so you did place sticks of 1000 long lines at once and then did remove them again and the ship while in Multiplayer didnt go back to only the core?

That the actual strange thing. Visually, it's gone back to the one and only core ; but statistically, it wasn't gone back to the core.

I'm sure it gone back to the only core block since I verified if some chunks were still there by doing a travelling view with my build camera on the 1 km line back with a block in center to seek any collision with hypothethical any remaining invisibles objects but I found absolutely no blocks. Moreover, if this blocks were actually existing I assume the ship's mark which focus on the ship center may not have corresponded to the core location but in something between the core and that remaining imaginary blocks, and it was not the case : in other words the center of the ship were also the center of the core.
The only existence of that 16 ghost blocks were their persistent values and interactions with the ship's stats. They were absolutely no way to remove this blocks manually because of their non-physical existence but also no way neither to delete ship since this blocks were statistically existents.

.. and on reload it was good again and it didnt happen in your local singleplayer game ?

The precise timeline is :

  1. 07 February 2016 : the 1st occurrence on my multi server. It happened on my ship name "G Type A".

I unintentionally produced it with Z and then Y line on the same ship core, for the same amount of generators the result was different. I identified it and attempted to erase the ship core : failure ; I couldn't remove the core. Admin deleted it. Spawned a new core and test and reproduce with Z. Admin deleted it. Same with Y, admin deleted it, and same with X, admin deleted it. Tried again with Z and tried to seek visually the remaining blocks. Found nothing, deduced they were no physical existence (or else wasn't rendering by the GUI)
Logs from the 07/02/2016 session here :

You can easely situate the bug in logs by the warning message :

Cannot delete core!
It must be the last
block remaining to delete.

  1. 09 February 2016 : the 2nd occurrence on my multi server (logs from the description section are from that day sessions). I connected this morning in order to reproduce it and saw if it was still happen.

2.1) 1st session on multy server : I created a ship named "Ghost" and was able to reproduce it with Z. (logs :

, ) Then I logged out in order to see if ship ghost blocks still there after a reboot.

2.2) 2nd session on multy server : I re-logged in. Ghosts blocks weren't there anymore, the core return to the normal I was able to remove it. Logged out.

2.3) 3rd session : Changed the server.cfg of an other world (my single mode creative server), changed the installation path of the client and updated it. Connected in single mode. Spawned core and tried to reproduce it with Z but nothing. (

, , )

2.4) 4rth session : Reseted my installation path to my multi server world, waited 2mn that environment loaded and my ping decreased, tried to reproduce but nothing this time too. I was able to put 1000 and undo 1000 Z generators without troubles.

,

I'll looking forward the next session and pay attention about lags to keep you tune.

OK!

The entire system isnt designed to handle build areas that big.
That will simply break the game on purpose.
i do advice to set it not higher than 25.
the game cant handle the initialisation of so many chunks at once if you add a 1000 in one dimension.
if it works you are lucky, most likely you will be ending up with something corrupted.

and we have reports about those effects already in queue.

rejecting this there fore

PLAYER_MAX_BUILD_AREA = 10 //max area a player may add/remove in adv. build mode

Ok thanks. May it worth to add a disclaimer about this limitation in the comment of the parameter in server.cfg. I.e something like "a value exceeding 25 may corrupt data, use at your own risk"

It does work to use like 1000, BUT
make sure you do not revert an action before it is fully processed.
In fact anything going over a sector border and or "out of your view range" may fail if altered again before the server processed the command.
