Zoom in fully, to first person view, then equip the helmet. (note: this happens for all animations, but is easiest to see on the helmet one) Wait a few seconds, allowing enough time for the animation to finish, and then zoom out, and you will see the animation only just begin. You can also pause the animation, mid-animation by zooming in again, and then zooming out again will show it paused.
