Starmade | can't remove blocks behind non cubic blocks
Confirmed task for development, TrivialPublic

Description

the behavior of the copy selection area when it comes to angle blocks is somewhat random
and there are times with copy selection areas greater than a single cube that do not copy what
the yellow highlight is surrounding.

selection area

paste result

what should have been

blocks whose sides match the same plane as a cubes sides are unaffected such as the
triangular sides of a wedge or the right triangle sides on a hepta . Since the hepta shares
a plane on all its right triangle sides it behaves just like a cube for copy selection areas.

https://youtu.be/T_JxSS3JzhA

this doesn't always happen

there's a few trouble spots in this particular example causing the selection box to go in an unexpected direction

to keep it simple the non cube blocks should act like cubes for purposes of determining copy selection area.
if the cursor is pointed through one plane of that cube area and is pointed at the block it should act as though
it were pointed at that side of a cube whose side occupies that same plane

partial fix

The ability to remove blocks behind non cubic blocks has been restored and the copy paste selection area has been made to represent what it will actually be copying. The only remaining problem is the selection area disappears when aiming at a block right next to a partial block, when looking through that partial blocks "missing area".

Blocks that really suffer from it are tetras. The copy area that gets flipped is also equal to the removal area (right click) so both of these are bugged. The build area (left click) works fine since it always ends up in in the yellow box, although in that case the yellow box sometimes get flipped.

I somehow think there is a related issue (or at least there was a related issue - could not find it) because the same is still true for Remove Mode, in certain circumstances the selection goes the wrong way:

->

Happens the same as shown in the video above - dependent on mousepointer position on the block

indeed also the remove blocks thing sometimes acts strange

@micdoodle :

Hi! The issue seems to fixed with wedges but i still get those wrong selection areas with tetras and heptas in 0.19435.

not fixed

I'm still getting odd selection behavior with wedges, corners, and tetras.

Take note of the selection area highlight, you'll notice the area selected for copying does not consistently match what is pasted.

Partial fix

Only a few more quirks to iron out.

Certain instances where non cube blocks are next to other blocks will cause the copy selection area to disappear making it impossible to tell what is being copied until you select to paste it and see the preview. This usually happens where your cursor is pointing through the cubic area of a non cube block and hitting the block next to it.

A more minor effect of the above is when the selection area is not invisible its flipped from its usual orientation when pointing at that side.

Those instances spunkie describes also stop you from removing a block next to non cubic block, including that the copy selection area (and remove mode/build mode area highlight) is not visible.

Examples taken from T800
You can remove this wedge:

But not the solid block behind it:

I encountered some more unusual behavior with un-removable "ghost" blocks seemingly related to this and managed to capture it on film. Taken on 0.19465 (Dev).

I've had some measured success reproducing it by creating blocks on the far-extent of a build symmetry plain and then attempting to remove their counterparts on the opposite side of that plain. Usually encountered at lengths greater than 50m from the core / origin of the plains or when adding / removing blocks (manually) at a high rate.

I have not experienced this issue when removing large areas of blocks at one time (25m^3 to 500m^3), and it can be bypassed by removing the blocks on the opposite side of the symmetry plain or using a large remove area to encompass them from another tangible point.

Just to add: This also applies to the new 1/4 block

one can neither remove the solid orange blocks behind the wedges nor the grey 1/4 block in the center (only happens with this rotation).

I concur, placing and removing blocks work very differently since the last 3 updates, maybe 4. Aiming at the side of a tetra (for exemple) i could easily place a hepta. Now i have to be very, very precise where my mouse pointer is to be able to do that.

Removing blocks is now impossible when they are behind an angled block and there are other blocks near them or facing them.

partial fix

The ability to remove blocks behind non cubic blocks has been restored and the copy paste selection area has been made to represent what it will actually be copying. The only remaining problem is the selection area disappears when aiming at a block right next to a partial block, when looking through that partial blocks "missing area".
